Our partners Heritage Expeditions invite you on a noble expedition that allows you to be part of a critical conservation and research effort to view and save the Sea Otters that are found on the Kuril Islands and Kamchatka.
This expedition is suited to those interested in protecting the well being of wildlife and the experience experts supporting the efforts make this tour possible. Animal and nature conservation is massively underfunded in Russia, this problem is caused by issues such as the vastness of the land and the inability of people to access remote areas. Bearing this in mind, this expedition is only made available by an experienced team of researchers whose aim is to embark on a detailed study of the Sea Otters living on the Kuril Islands and Kamchatka.
Start your 18 day adventure in the southern Kuril Islands before working over to the wild Kamchatka Peninsula. The research project is to be led by the otter specialist – Katya Ovsyanikova and supported by world-renowned professionals whose aim is to perform a sea otter population census, collect their genetic material and carry out food source surveys.
The impact you have by participating in this unique expedition is invaluable, as you help to carry out the population census and divers can explore the waters for bottom sampling. When you are not assisting the world class team you can take the time to enjoy your own research as you go birding, hiking, botanising and taking photographs.
Only two underwater divers are able to be accommodated on this trip – but you must be qualified to the Padi Rescue Standard.
