Sea Otter Survey Adventure Tour

The Sea of Okhotsk is so named after the abundance of wildlife that calls it home. Even though the area is widely used as a hunting ground, the sea still remains rich in wildlife with some of the most interesting and wild species known to man residing there. So little of known of the sea and it must be further explored.

Join one of the only expeditions to venture out into the Sea of Okhotsk, the sheltered sea and ice-floes make this part of the sea unreachable most of the year. The sea is surrounded by the Russian continent, the Kamchatka Peninsula, the Kuril Island and the Sakhalin Island. The coast of the sea once played home to a number of indigenous people, namely the Nivikh, the Oroki and the Even. Times have changed and many of these cultures have been displaced, yet their descendants practice the traditional way of life.

The town of Okhotsk seems frozen in time, back to the days when the noble 17^th century explorer Vitus Bering began two expeditions from this small town. In addition to this, visit the town of Madagan which was once an entrance to the Kolyma Goldfields. This is a landmark in history as many political prisoners were brought here to work in the mines, under the rule of Stalin.

Man’s treatment of wildlife in this region is also not impressive with over 160 Whaling Boats hunting these waters in 1854 for the Bowhead Whale. After almost being hunted to extinction, the whales are returning to the rich Sea of Okhotsk and it may be possible to see the Grey Whale and the Bowhead Whale. Other impressive species you can hope to see on this tour include the Ribbon Seal, Steller’s Sea Lions, Northern Fur Seals, Tufted Puffins, Steller’s Sea Eagle, Wolves, Big Horned Sheep, Arctic Fox and, possibly even the mighty Kamchatka Brown Bear.
