Bering's Wake Cruise Adventure Tour

This expedition is as unique as the First Kamchatka Expedition of 1725 – 1730 which was led by Danish explorer Commander Vitus Bering by the order of Peter the Great. Bering was commanded to travel from St Petersburg to the Kamchatka Peninsula where he was to build two ships and begin sailing “north by northeast...... chart the coast and collect information”.

It was an expedition that required great ambition. Bering set sail from Nizhnekamchatsk on the lower Kamchatka River; whereas your expedition departs from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy – a city named in honour of Bering’s two ships which sailed from here for the second Kamchatka or Great Northern Expedition which he also led.

From here you sail ‘north by north east’ to discover natural wonders and a spellbinding wilderness that few have seen or had the pleasure to experience because of the remoteness of the region and its status as a ‘closed area’ until the early 1990’s. It is a land of extremes and countless environments including snow-capped active volcanoes, geothermal regions, immense forests, widespread tundra, unpopulated islands and rich oceans.

Every day you search for the best wildlife experience, and there will be many, but one bird is of particular importance - the extremely rare Spoon-billed Sandpiper (Eurynorhynchus pygmeus).This bird is classified as ‘critically endangered’ and its only known breeding ground is in northern Kamchatka and Chukotka – the area that you are to visit. Topical field studies show that the worldwide population is much lower than thought previously, possibly fewer than 320 breeding pairs and this number is fast declining.
