The russet-coloured columns were originally built as lighthouses in 1810.  During the 19^th century, gas torches replaced the oil lamps and are still used on ceremonial occasions.  There are four figures at the base of the columns representing four of Russia’s rivers, Dnieper, Neva, Volga and Volkhov.
